Psychodanamic Psychiatry in Clinical Practice (4th edition) has a very good table of defense mechanisms categorized by three types:

  1. Primitive defenses
  2. Higher-level neurotic defenses
  3. Mature defenses

Select any of the three types for a full description. The descriptions come from Table 2-1 of the book.
